India Electronics Manufacturing Hits ₹13.11 Lakh Crore in FY26

India’s electronics manufacturing sector has expanded rapidly over the past decade, with production rising to an estimated ₹13.11 lakh crore in FY 2025-26 and exports reaching ₹4.24 lakh crore, according to information released by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

The growth has been led by the mobile phone industry, which has transformed India into the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer. Mobile phones have also become India’s largest export product in FY 2025-26, supported by rising domestic manufacturing capacity, increased investments, and expanding global demand.

Key Highlights

  • Electronics production increased from ₹1.90 lakh crore in 2014-15 to ₹13.11 lakh crore in 2025-26.
  • Electronics exports reached ₹4.24 lakh crore (USD 47.96 billion), making electronic goods India’s third-largest export category.
  • Mobile phone production grew to ₹6.27 lakh crore, while exports rose to ₹2.60 lakh crore.
  • India has created around 25 lakh jobs in electronics manufacturing, including 12 lakh jobs linked to the mobile manufacturing ecosystem.
  • Women make up nearly 70% of the direct workforce in mobile phone manufacturing.
  • The PLI Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing has attracted over ₹20,600 crore in investments and supported cumulative production worth ₹11.62 lakh crore.

Electronics Manufacturing Expands Employment Across India

The electronics manufacturing sector has become one of India’s fastest-growing industrial employers. According to MeitY, the sector has generated around 25 lakh jobs, while the mobile phone manufacturing ecosystem alone supports approximately 12 lakh direct and indirect jobs across the supply chain.

Government initiatives have also contributed to employment growth. MeitY stated that its flagship schemes have created more than 5.3 lakh jobs, including around 1.8 lakh jobs under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme and 3.5 lakh jobs through other electronics manufacturing programmes.

Large manufacturing clusters in Hosur and Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu and Bengaluru in Karnataka now employ more than one lakh workers, reflecting the rapid expansion of India’s electronics production network. These facilities produce smartphones and electronic components for both domestic and international markets while supporting a growing skilled workforce.

Women Play a Major Role in Mobile Manufacturing

Women have become a significant part of India’s electronics manufacturing workforce. They account for nearly 30% of the total workforce created in the electronics sector over the past decade.

The share is even higher in mobile phone manufacturing, where women represent nearly 70% of the direct workforce, making it one of India’s most women-intensive manufacturing industries. The government said that the PLI Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing has generated employment opportunities for around 90,000 women.

Several large electronics manufacturers now employ tens of thousands of workers, with women forming a majority of employees at some production facilities. This reflects the sector’s growing role in creating formal manufacturing jobs and expanding workforce participation.

Production, Exports, and Local Manufacturing Continue to Grow

India’s electronics industry has recorded strong growth in production and exports over the last decade.

Electronics production increased from ₹1.90 lakh crore in FY 2014-15 to an estimated ₹13.11 lakh crore in FY 2025-26, representing nearly a seven-fold rise. During the same period, electronics exports climbed from ₹38,263 crore to ₹4.24 lakh crore, an increase of more than eleven times.

The manufacturing ecosystem has also become more integrated. According to the government, over 40 major component manufacturers have established or expanded operations in India, supported by a growing network of Tier-2, Tier-3, and Tier-4 suppliers. As a result, domestic value addition in electronics manufacturing has increased from 15% to 23%, indicating greater localisation of production.

Mobile Phones Become India’s Largest Export Product

The mobile phone industry has been the biggest contributor to the expansion of India’s electronics sector.

Mobile phone production increased from ₹18,900 crore in FY 2014-15 to ₹6.27 lakh crore in FY 2025-26, while exports rose from ₹1,566 crore to ₹2.60 lakh crore during the same period.

With this growth, mobile phones have moved from being India’s 153rd largest export item in FY 2014-15 to becoming the country’s largest export product in FY 2025-26. The government also stated that India is now the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, reflecting the country’s growing role in global electronics supply chains.

The PLI Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing has been one of the major policy initiatives supporting this expansion. As of 31 March 2026, the scheme had attracted more than ₹20,600 crore in cumulative investments. It has also supported cumulative production exceeding ₹11.62 lakh crore and exports worth over ₹6.53 lakh crore, according to official data.

The latest figures indicate that India’s electronics manufacturing sector is expanding beyond final assembly into a broader ecosystem that includes component production, supplier networks, and higher domestic value addition. This shift has strengthened India’s position in global manufacturing while increasing employment opportunities across the country.
