New Delhi/Aizawl: Union Minister for the Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, joined by Mizoram Chief Minister Shri Lalduhoma, officially launched the Mizoram Ginger Mission, a ₹189.79 crore convergence-driven initiative aimed at transforming ginger cultivation and its value chain in the state of Mizoram.
The Mission is anchored by MDoNER and built on a multi-ministerial convergence framework, drawing in the Ministries of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Rural Development, and Food Processing Industries, alongside institutional partners including NABARD, ICAR, and APEDA, as well as private sector investors focused on ginger processing.
Bridging a Stark Price Gap
At the heart of the Mission is a striking economic disparity that has long disadvantaged Mizo farmers. Despite Mizoram’s GI-certified ginger containing 6-8% oleoresin, more than double the global average of approximately 3%, farmers currently receive only ₹8 to ₹15 per kilogram at the farm gate, even as the same produce commands upwards of ₹500 per kilogram in international markets.
Minister Scindia framed this gap as both an injustice and an opportunity. Calling for a decisive push to “disintermediate the intermediary,” he emphasised the need to strengthen farmer-producer organisations (FPOs) and cooperative structures so that growers become direct beneficiaries of the value they create. “The objective is not merely crop cultivation,” he said, “but enabling farmers to participate meaningfully in processing, branding, packaging, export-led value addition, and global market integration — from farm to fork.”
Four Pillars, One Movement
Positioning the initiative as the “Mizo Ginger Movement,” the Minister outlined its four strategic pillars: Convergence, Value Addition, Branding, and Market Integration. The Mission envisages the creation of one integrated Processing Hub and three Spoke centres, along with more than 30 strategic interventions. Nearly 20,000 farming households are expected to be integrated into a unified value-chain ecosystem built on traceability, quality assurance, and farmer-led value creation.
MDoNER Secretary Shri Sanjay Jaju, in his introductory remarks, elaborated on the implementation framework, emphasising the importance of time-bound critical milestones, optimal utilisation of GI-certified varieties, and systematic reduction of post-harvest losses.
Global Market Ambitions
The Mission sets a clear international vision for Mizo Ginger, with targeted market entry into South-East Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Minister Scindia articulated a defining metric for success: the day Mizo Ginger is available on global retail shelves, fully traceable to individual farmers, and delivering direct economic returns to them.
The initiative is projected to deliver a six-fold increase in farmer value realisation, significantly reduce post-harvest losses, establish Mizo Ginger as an internationally recognised premium brand, and build a robust export and processing ecosystem for the region.

Part of a Larger “Brand North East” Vision
The Mizoram Ginger Mission sits within a broader government strategy to create a distinctive identity for each northeastern state, Sikkim as India’s Organic State, Kiwi from Arunachal Pradesh, Queen Pineapple from Tripura, Coffee from Nagaland, and Lakadong Turmeric from Meghalaya. Mizo Ginger, with its exceptional pharma-grade quality, is poised to become the flagship product representing Mizoram on the world stage.
Stakeholder Voices
Chief Minister Lalduhoma welcomed the initiative as a defining moment in Mizoram’s agricultural and economic journey, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to time-bound ground-level execution. Farmers from Champhai district, long recognised as a hub for premium ginger cultivation, expressed gratitude to MDoNER for finally creating a structured pathway to realise the true value of their produce. Private sector partners also pledged full support, commending the ministry for building an enabling ecosystem that bridges the gap between Mizoram’s world-class ginger and the markets it deserves.
With institutional backing, private investment, and government commitment aligned, the Mizoram Ginger Mission marks a significant step toward sustainable rural livelihoods and the emergence of Mizo Ginger as a globally competitive premium agricultural brand.
